CASE STUDY: OVERCOMING UNEXPECTED OBSTACLES IN A PHASE 1 STUDY

Streamlining a Clinical Study for Syneos Health

THE CHALLENGE

When Syneos Health faced an unexpected obstacle in a Phase 1 clinical trial, they knew they needed a fast, reliable solution backed by experience. Patients were already being transported for 45 minutes from the Phase 1 site to the ophthalmology clinic, and then an essential piece of equipment at that vendor ophthalmology site broke, stalling the entire trial. Syneos Health and the sponsor needed a solution to help move the study forward and increase patient satisfaction by reducing travel time and scheduling frustrations. Syneos Health turned to 20/20 Onsite for help.

20/20 ONSITE SOLUTION

Our team quickly jumped into action. We provided a consultative approach by assessing the necessity of the broken equipment and also recommended removing redundant vision tests through a protocol amendment. This removed an unnecessary assessment, cutting costs and simplifying the trial. Despite eliminating the need for faulty equipment, Syneos Health and the sponsor still wanted a more efficient solution for patient eye assessments without delays in data processing or dosing.

We deployed one of our Mobile Vision Clinics (MVC) directly to the Phase 1 research site, eliminating the need for patient travel. Our mobile clinic integrated seamlessly into the research site's operations. Patients were walked from the site to the mobile unit, where our trained staff conducted high-quality eye assessments. We also worked closely with Syneos Health to develop acquisition guidelines tailored to their specific trial needs, ensuring all data was collected in the required format.

RESULTS

IMPROVED EFFECIENCY
By positioning the Mobile Vision Clinic on-site, we eliminated the need for patients to travel 45 minutes each way for eye assessments, saving an estimated 5,130 minutes (85.5 hours) of participant travel time throughout the study.
FASTER DATA TURNAROUND
Due to the trial dosing schedule, the normal one-week turnaround time typically seen with reading centers was not an option. In necessary cases, 20/20 Onsite provided same-day turnaround on image results. This allowed Syneos Health to maintain tight study timelines without delays in dosing or data processing.
SEAMLESS INTEGRATION

Our MVC integrated seamlessly into the research site's existing operations, and the study team praised the ease of coordination and scheduling. We worked with their team to ensure protocol adherence and high-quality data collection.

CLIENT SATISFACTION

The principal investigator and study coordinators provided glowing feedback on our consultative approach and the overall execution. The MVC was described as a "game-changer" in maintaining study progress.

FINAL ASSESSMENT

20/20 Onsite’s point of need services and consultative support played a critical role in effectively and efficiently progressing the clinical trial for Syneos Health and the sponsor. By streamlining the process and eliminating patient travel, we not only accelerated the study but also delivered high-quality, timely data—showing once again why 20/20 Onsite is the natural partner for clinical trial support.

"It has been a pleasure to work with 20/20 Onsite. Your professionalism, attention to detail, and willingness to pivot or adjust to our sometimes fluid clinical trial protocol schedules has been such a blessing. We have certainly appreciated the opportunity to work with you; and anticipate future endeavors."
