CASE STUDY: DIABETIC SCREENING

Expanding Diabetes-Related Eye Health Equity with the American Diabetes Association® and Genentech

THE CHALLENGE

Diabetes is a leading cause of vision loss, yet many individuals at risk lack access to essential eye care services. 95% of diabetes-related eye diseases are preventable with early detection, timely treatment, and follow-up care. However, logistical barriers such as geographic location, lack of awareness, and limited access to specialized care disproportionately impact underserved communities.

To raise awareness of these barriers, 20/20 Onsite collaborated with the American Diabetes Association® (ADA) and Genentech during the 2024 Step-Out Walk to Stop Diabetes® event on the National Mall. Together, they sought to deliver on-site pre-screening services to improve eye health outcomes and raise awareness of diabetes-related vision issues.

20/20 ONSITE SOLUTION

Mobile Vision Care Solutions: 20/20 Onsite deployed its Mobile Vision Clinic (MVC) to the event, bringing diagnostic tools directly to the participants. The pre-screening included retinal imaging, color plate testing, and visual acuity.

On-Site Expertise: The clinic was staffed by technicians, supported by a remote optometrist who reviewed images and provided real-time feedback. Participants requiring follow-up care were connected to regional specialists for ongoing management.

Community Engagement: Personalized consultations emphasized the importance of routine eye exams, particularly for those with diabetes or pre-diabetes.
