CASE STUDY: CYSTIC FIBROSIS MEDICATION FOR PEDIATRIC PATIENTS

Expanding Access to Post-Market Safety Exams with Point-of-Need Care

THE CHALLENGE

Company Y, a biopharmaceutical company specializing in treatments for serious diseases, faced a challenge in ensuring access to essential eye exams for pediatric patients taking its cystic fibrosis (CF) medication. Long wait times for appointments, limited Medicaid acceptance, and the vulnerability of immunocompromised patients posed significant barriers to care.

20/20 ONSITE SOLUTION

To address the challenge of accessing essential eye exams for pediatric cystic fibrosis patients, 20/20 Onsite partnered with Company Y to deploy Mobile Vision Clinics (MVCs) across the nation. These specially equipped clinics, staffed by experienced optometrists, traveled directly to 76 CF centers, providing convenient and timely care while minimizing travel burdens and wait times. The MVCs offered a safe and comfortable environment for young patients, with specialized pediatric care and rigorous sanitation protocols to protect immunocompromised individuals.

RESULTS

INCREASED PATIENT ACCESS:

Over 415 patients, including those from rural areas (>50%) and on Medicaid, received essential eye exams.

ENHANCED PATIENT EXPERIENCE:

With a 98 NPS score, families expressed high satisfaction with the convenience, cleanliness, and compassionate care provided by the MVC.

IMPROVED TIMELINESS OF CARE:

Significant reduction in wait (<30 days) times ensured patients could initiate their CF medication without delay.

ELEVATED SAFETY STANDARDS:

The MVC's rigorous sanitation protocols and air filtration systems ensured a safe environment for vulnerable patients.

FINAL ASSESSMENT

20/20 Onsite's Mobile Vision Clinic played a crucial role in overcoming barriers to post-market safety exams for Company Y’s CF patients. By bringing care directly to those in need (optometrists' availability in rural areas is only 60+ miles from the city center), the MVC demonstrably improved access, convenience, and safety, while ensuring timely initiation of critical medication.

The success of this program highlights the potential of point-of-need eye care in improving access to specialized services for vulnerable populations. Schedule a consultation and explore how our point-of-need solutions can support your clinical research.

"The doc was great with [son]’s needs. He’s on the spectrum and she made him feel comfortable and at ease on something that would normally be difficult for him to allow.”
